The good thing about upgrading the insulation levels in your home is that this is a "once-and-done" investment that requires no upkeep or replacement. Increasing insulation value while decreasing air leakage will pay off in improved comfort and energy savings for as long as you own your home.
While there’s no argument about the importance of insulation in the home, many people disagree about what type of insulation is best to use.
Some people still insist on fiberglass batt insulation because it’s so familiar and so widely available. Others insist that spray foam insulation outperforms other types because of its high R-value per inch and its ability to expand and fill voids.

It’s easy to understand why cellulose insulation is often overlooked. After all, it doesn’t have a famous mascot like the Pink Panther®. Nor does it have the high-tech allure of 2-part spray polyurethane foam (SPF). But cellulose does actually outperform both of these insulation choices in some important ways. Here are a few noteworthy advantages that cellulose offers over other types of home insulation:
Nontoxic. You won’t find cellulose insulation installers wearing the hazmat suits and high-performance respirators used by SPF installers. Cellulose insulation is made from recycled newsprint that contains soy-based ink, and from borate additives that are also used in laundry detergents and eye wash solutions.
Excellent resistance to fire and flame spread. Cellulose insulation from Nu-Wool carries a UL-listed class 1 (the highest) fire rating. Tests have shown that cellulose insulation outperforms fiberglass insulation in stopping flame spread once a fire has started.
Effective cavity-filling capabilities. Cellulose insulation is often blown under high pressure into wall cavities that either have no insulation or fiberglass batt insulation that is underperforming due to voids, compression and other installation errors. This "dense-pack" cellulose effectively fills voids and helps eliminate drafty walls that can make rooms uncomfortably cold or hot at different times of the year.
Acoustic insulation. Cellulose doesn’t just stop energy loss; it also is an effective sound-deadening treatment. It is sometimes added to interior walls or between floors to provide more privacy and lessen "noise pollution."
Low GWP. Environmentalists and green living experts frequently refer to Global Warming Potential (GWP) as the ultimate measure of a product’s green value. Manufacturing fiberglass insulation is very energy intensive because furnaces must operate for prolonged periods at high temperatures. SPF insulation requires petroleum products and blowing agents that increase greenhouse gas emissions. These manufacturing requirements have high GWP, especially when compared to cellulose insulation. Nu-Wool cellulose contains at least 85% recycled paper content and requires relatively little energy to manufacture.
Installation expertise. When you hire a Nu-Wool insulation expert, you can be sure that your installer has been trained to industry-leading standards, using the best equipment available. It’s good to know your once-and-done insulation upgrade will be done right.
